Who We Are

A community built on heritage, held together by care.

The Ikwuano Umuahia Community Association of Canada (IUCA) was formed in 2008 to build a community where our rich Igbo culture, heritage, social interaction, and education would transcend generations of Ikwuano-Umuahia indigenes living in Canada.

Today we are a thriving community where peace, love, joy, and respect reign — from our youngest to our oldest generation.

  • Cultural preservation across generations
  • Mutual support for families and individuals
  • Educational opportunity for our youth
  • Connection to our homeland and each other

Message from the President

Ikwuano-Umuahia, originally part of the old Bende Division, was a core part of Eastern Nigeria. Umuahia was declared the second (and soon became the longest serving) capital of the short-lived nation of the Republic of Biafra, on 28 September 1967, after the first capital, Enugu, was captured by Nigerian troops.

Umuahia is currently Abia State capital, a southeastern region. Umuahia is renowned for being a railway and agricultural market center, which attracts traders and farmers from neighboring towns to sell their produce, such as yams, cassava, corn (maize), taro, citrus fruits, and palm oil and kernels.

Ikwuano-Umuahia produced notable personalities, among whom were Late Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, the first Nigerian GOC and military Head of State; Late Dr. Michael Okpara, last Premier of the Eastern Region of Nigeria; Late Samson Omeruo, former Governor of Anambra State; and Bright Chimezie, to mention but a few.

Ikwuano-Umuahia Community Association Canada (IUCA) was formed in 2008 with the objective and mission to build a community where our rich culture (which we are very proud of), heritage, social interaction, and education would transcend generations of Ikwuano-Umuahia indigenes.

Our motto is Onuru ube nwanne agbala oso, which translates to mean "Don't run away when you hear your brother or sister's cry." We are proud to inform you that we have today built a community where peace, love, joy, and respect reign from our youngest to the oldest generation.

Our objective is to support the less privileged, orphans, and the medically handicapped back home with proceeds from tonight's event.

Thank you and Long Live IKWUANO-UMUAHIA.
